Prioritising Mental Health

Simone Biles, American Gymnast, is one of many athletes making the news about one topical and now, global subject.  Simone spoke out on why she decided to pull out of the Olympic Games in Tokyo.  Not because of a physical injury but in fear of jeopardising her mental health.

A famous mental health quote by his Holiness, Dalai Lama, who also celebrates 10 years of Action for Happiness , perfectly surmises Simone Biles actions:

“If you feel burnout setting in, if you feel demoralised and exhausted, it is best, for the sake of everyone, to withdraw and restore yourself”.

There are obviously two parties of varying opinions on the decision she made.  One in favour and applauding her decision stating that she is a strong advocate for mental health, especially those of the younger generation.  Simone Biles responded to the majority of positive support saying:

“The output of love & support I have received has made me realise I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics”

Though there is another party of people who were against her decision, saying that she should ‘do her job’.

Is it time that we saw prioritising mental health as a form of strength and not a weakness?

The Government furlough scheme will be ending next month, in September.  With the growing number of businesses re-opening their offices after a year of being shut, the wellbeing of their staff cannot be ignored.

This is a new experience for all and businesses are starting to see that there needs to be a balance between supporting their employees as well as the business’s needs.  All organisations know that their staff’s productivity is key in the performance of their business as well financially.  Mental health-related absence cost UK businesses £14 billion last year, according to research by Westfield Health, with Covid-19 (Coronavirus) largely to blame.  Mental health issues are the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK.

Is there awareness of the signs and symptoms, as well as an understanding of mental health problems in your workplace?  As a Line Manager, HR team member, Leader, etc., do you understand your staff’s work preferences; their work adjustments, and mental health support?
